It was created in Septemberwhen the people of the Rif revolted and declared their independence from Spanish occupation as well as from the Moroccan sultan Yusef.    Today, the movement to establish a neo-Rif Republic Capital: Ajdir. This source covers the Berber tribes of the Rif, an area along the northern coast of Spanish Morocco.
It deals in particular with three adjoining sub-areas: Rif, Ghomara, and Northern Senhaja. The book covers first the geography, traditional history, and recorded history of the area.

The Rif War was an armed conflict fought from to between the colonial power Spain (later joined by France) and the Berber tribes of the Rif mountainous region of by Abd el-Krim, the Riffians at first inflicted several defeats on the Spanish forces by using guerrilla tactics and captured European weapons.

The Arabic word rif means "the edge of the cultivated area" and aptly describes Riffian territory. Dwelling on the harsh slopes of the Rif Mountains in Morocco and Algeria, the Riffians inhabit a land of deserts, mountains, and rolling fields.
The Africans call this entire region Maghrib. Berber society is made up of families who are members of a tribe which is a member of a clan of tribes.
Each tribe has a chieftain. The French had the tribes organized into confederations to control them. After independence the King created 16 regions of Morocco based around geographic areas. Most Berbers were farmers. The Dades live in the North East, The Mesgita, Seddrat and Zeri tribes are along the rives of the North West.
